Sweeter, juicier and with three times more Vitamin C than other pineapples, the Golden Pineapple is as precious as its name suggests. So its not hard to see why it is the worlds best-selling pineapple variety. Taking its name from its skin tone, this low-acid pineapple variant first hit shelves in 1996, providing consumers a natural sweetness which at that time can only be found in sugary tinned pineapples. It was developed by Del Monte in Hawaii and is commonly grown in Costa Rica and the Philippines.
True to its name, the Queen Pineapple or Formosa is definitely a royal treat for the palate. It is known for its characteristic aroma, crisp texture and mild, delicate flavor; but because of its high sugar content, it mostly suitable for fresh consumption. It is a small pineapple variety; commonly not exceeding two kilograms in weight. It is also quite nutritious, containing vitamin C, vitamin A, phosphorus, calcium and carbohydrates.
Considered by many as the best tasting type of pineapple there is; the Smooth Cayenne is the primary pineapple variety in the world. It is characterized by its high acid and sugar content. Commonly cone-shaped and weighing anywhere between three to five pounds, the Smooth Cayenne can either come fresh or canned.
